How the estimate works

Drip edge is the metal flashing that runs along the roof's edges — the eaves (the bottom, horizontal edges) and the rakes (the sloped side edges). Together those edges are essentially the roof's perimeter, so we take 2 × (length + width), add a waste allowance for overlaps and corner cuts, and divide by 10 feet to count standard pieces.

Types of drip edge

Drip edge comes in three standard profiles, and the one you need affects both fit and code compliance:

  • Type C — a simple L-shaped bend with a hemmed lower edge. The basic, lowest-cost profile.
  • Type D (or T) — a "T" shape with a lower kick-out that pushes water further off the fascia. It's the profile most building codes now specify for new roofs.
  • Type F — a longer top flange, made for going over existing shingles or along rake edges (a "gutter apron" is a related F-style piece for the eaves).

Most residential roofs use aluminum in a 2×2-inch or slightly larger face; steel is used where impact or fire resistance matters. Match the flange to your shingle overhang and confirm the required type with your local code.

Why it matters

Drip edge directs water off the roof and into the gutters instead of behind them and down the fascia. It's cheap, it's now required by most codes, and running short mid-install means an extra trip — so it's worth ordering a couple of spare pieces.

It costs more than drip edge on a new roof because each shingle edge must be gently lifted (and the first course sometimes re-nailed) to slip the flange underneath. Rake edges are easier: a Type F profile is made to slide over existing shingles, which is why retrofits often use it.

How many pieces of drip edge for a 2,000 sq ft house?

It depends on the roof footprint, not the living area. A single-story 2,000 sq ft home is roughly 40 × 50 ft — about 180 linear feet of edge, or 20 standard 10-foot pieces with waste. Drip edge vs gutter apron — what’s the difference?

Both are edge flashing, but the lower leg is shaped differently. Standard drip edge (Type C or D) has a short kick-out that throws water off the fascia; a gutter apron (a Type F profile) has a longer, angled lower leg that reaches over the back of the gutter so water can’t wick behind it. Use a gutter apron along eaves that have gutters and regular drip edge along the rakes. If your fascia is staining or water runs behind the gutter, a gutter apron is usually the fix — count it in the same linear feet the calculator gives for your eaves.
